CPRC (Canadian Police Research Center) has partnered with Draganfly Innovations Inc of Saskatoon to explore the use of drone aircraft in assisting law enforcement. At the center of the study is the Draganflyer TSU (Tactical Surveillance Unit) helicopter. This small, electric helicopter is an easy way to get a birds-eye view of any situation, and it won't break the budget of police agencies.

The ability of the Draganflyer TSU to easily and safely manoeuvre in an urban environment lets it fill a void between traditional aircraft, ground based robots and people. An accelerated learning curve and simple flight characteristics are due to flight training software and several onboard electronic sensors. These sensors allow the helicopter to automatically level itself if the operator loses control. Also, the sensitivity of the controls can even be adjusted to the pilots liking. By incorporating these features the pilot is able to fly around buildings, yards and even inside larger buildings with minimal experience.

Weighing in it at about one pound the Draganflyer TSU will be able to survey both indoor and outdoor scenes for roughly 17 minutes at a time. After this period of time the TSU can quickly get airborne again simply by changing the battery. The helicopter is built on a rigid and durable frame made entirely from carbon fiber and nylon. Due to its low number of moving parts the TSU is both low maintenance and easy and cost effective to repair.

The Draganflyer TSU comes complete in a military grade transportation case to house all needed components.

The Draganflyers ability to transmit high resolution real time video to a portable ground based station more than 1300 feet away may prove to be a very attractive feature. With its high quality video the TSU is a more cost effective alternative to full size aircraft and considerably safer than sending a person into a potentially dangerous situation.

This helicopter is not only for hazardous situations, it can also be successfully used in incidents that would not justify the use of an expensive full size aircraft. One of these other scenarios would be to gain evidentiary aerial photos for such things as traffic collision scenes.

While the small size and powerful features of the Draganflyer TSU give it great advantages for close-in flying operations, but they also limit what the helicopter can be used for and weather conditions it can be flown in. The TSU is not a replacement for traditional full-size aircraft, however it addresses the need for tools able to obtain close-in situational awareness. CPRC is presently working with several police agencies to trial the Draganflyer TSU and learn what opportunities, limitations, and techniques this new form of tool holds for policing.
