Have you ever wanted to add active stabilization to your RC airplane? The new Eagle Tree Guardian Stabilization sensor plugs in to your OSD pro and adds fully adjustable pitch and roll stabilization to your aircraft. This means that at the flick of a switch, you can turn on active stabilization and effectively null out any unwanted movements in your plane while flying.

Features

• Heading Hold – Using the heading hold feature, you can lock your airplane into flying in one specific direction. Any unwanted movements caused by wind gusts, propeller torque or other interference will be automatically compensated for using your aircrafts control surfaces.
• Roll and Pitch Stabilization – Roll and Pitch are controlled through the Guardian Stabilization Sensor. Should the aircraft bank or pitch, it will be immediately corrected.
• Artificial Horizon – When enabled, the Guardian Stabilization sensor will display an artificial horizon on the OSD Pro video output, which you can use to fly your airplane without reference to the ground! This means that you can fly your aircraft through clouds, smoke and other obstructions without losing your reference to the horizon.
• Adjustable Gains and Sensitivity – The Guardian Stabilization sensor allows you to adjust the response aggressiveness (gain) for roll, pitch, and heading. This allows you to program the Guardian to work best with your individual model, and ensures an appropriate control response from the system.

The Academy of Model Aeronautics International Modeling Center hosted the 2011 FAI F3A World Championship competition where the World’s top RC aerobatic/pattern pilots competed for the honors of World Champion. Team USA was represented by Team Manager Albert Glenn and competitors Andrew Jesky, Chip Hyde and Brett Wickizer. These pilots qualified at the USA Nationals competition by finishing in the top four places to represent the USA. Two of the USA team members, Jesky and Hyde, piloted electric models powered by Thunder Power RC Pro Lite 25C series batteries during both the USA Nationals and F3A World Championships.

The FAI F3A class of competition demands the utmost skill and precision as pilots perform complex, aerial maneuvers ranging in varying difficulty of K-factor. Eighty-seven pilots from over 30 countries competed during four rounds of rigorous competition in temperatures measuring upwards of 150 degrees Fahrenheit off of the runway. The preliminary results had thirty of the 87 pilots moving on to the semi-finals. All of the Team USA and many pilots powered by Thunder Power RC moved on to the semi-finals. During the semi-finals the top thirty completed an additional 4 flights for the opportunity to make the finals. The finals were represented by the top ten pilots. Six of the top ten pilots were flying electric powered aircraft. Four of the six electric pilots in the top ten relied on Thunder Power RC to power their competitive flights. Congratulations to the top ten pilots representing their respective countries and Team Thunder Power RC: Wolfgang Matt, Stefan Kaiser, Chip Hyde and Andrew Jesky.

After many rounds of grueling competition, Thunder Power RC comes out on top as the power of choice for the World Championship Team USA with pilots Andrew Jesky and Chip Hyde. Thunder Power RC was the power behind the top placing electric pilots in the individual class of competition with both Jesky and Hyde. Andrew Jesky took home the bronze in the individual class of competition with Chip Hyde finishing 4th overall. Known throughout Europe as one of the rising stars of touring car racing, 17 year old Yannic will join 3-time World Champion Marc Rheinard, Viktor Wilck and Thomas Pumpler to represent Team Thunder Power RC. Yannic is relatively new to the top level racing circuit with only a couple years of racing under his belt, this rookie has made all the Pros take notice. Yannic recently raced in the Euro Touring Series (ETS) which finished the sixth round of competition in Andernach, Germany. His skills were well matched to compete among the Pros, as Yannic finished in 3rd place overall for both the race event and ETS series points. Yannic finished just behind fellow TPRC team driver Marc Rheinard and his Yokomo team mate Ronald Volker.

Eagle Tree Systems has just released version 4 of their popular Altitude MicroSensor. This new altimeter features a 1 foot vertical resolution and is able to function at up to 20,000 feet. Just like previous versions of the Altitude MicroSensor the version 4 model can connect directly to any of the Eagle Tree data loggers. This MicroSensor also features a built in 8 segment LED display and will read back the maximum altitude attained during each flight even when not plugged in to a data logger. You can daisy-chain this altimeter with other Eagle Tree MicroSensors when it is used with one of the Eagle Tree data loggers.

Thanks to the skills and talent of Team Pilot Jamie Robertson, Thunder Power RC brings home the 2011 Championship title in the Helicopter Class of the International Extreme Flight Championships. This win marks the third consecutive, back-to-back XFC win for Thunder Power RC and a second career XFC victory for Robertson. In the 2011 competition, fourteen pilots competed for the title of Champion in the Helicopter Class. With this win, Jamie now holds two XFC Championships and is one of only two pilots to win more than one XFC. Fellow TPRC pilot Nick Maxwell joined Jamie at the podium with a second place finish. In fact, three of the top four helicopter class finishes were powered by Thunder Power RC batteries and chargers with Bobby Watts finishing in 4th place overall. Thunder Power RC is proud to bring home a third consecutive XFC Heli Class win and to be power behind Jamie Robertson, Nick Maxwell and Bobby Watts XFC top place finishes.

The XFC is an invitational event with thirteen invited pilots and five spots open in each category for on-site tryouts. The three day event took place June 3-5, at the AMA National Flying Site in Muncie, Indiana. The preliminary competition took place on Friday and Saturday with four flight rounds (2 per day). These rounds consisted of one known flight including three required maneuvers and one pilot’s choice/unknown round a day. Sunday was reserved for the final round of the competition for the top seven pilots. The finals are 4 rounds of competition with two rounds of known and two rounds of unknown maneuvers. The event is scored by taking the pilot’s top score from each type of final round (known and unknown maneuvers) and adding them to their average score carried over from the preliminary flight rounds.

World-class, top talent competes head-to-head each year at the XFC. This year Jamie Robertson competed with his electric Mikado Logo 600 helicopter against the field of 13 other pilots. Jamie’s Mikado Logo 600 3D electric setup included Scorpion 560Kv motor (12 tooth pinion), a Thunder Power RC 10S 5000mAh G6 Pro Power 65C battery providing power to his mini V-bar system. Also in the winning setup included JR servos, Edge blades, Spektrum tail servo regulator and Spektrum satellite receivers. Backing up the power for Jamie’s performance was the Thunder Power RC TP820CD dual port charging system. When asked about the performance at XFC, Jamie commented:

“I was using the Thunder Power G6 Pro Power 65C batteries with a couple hundred cycles on them and the most important part of the event is consistent power and performance. Thunder Power batteries have always been able to provide the consistent power necessary for me to not have to worry about getting through all the maneuvers. Not once did I experience bog or struggle due to inconsistent LiPo performance. In fact, my G6 TPRC batteries performed the same at the beginning of the flight as they did at the end of the flight with no drop off in power.”

Many electric RC enthusiasts fly small indoor models that use 1 cell lipo batteries. These 1 cell batteries are usually charged with simple multi port chargers that come with ready to fly and bind and fly RC planes and helicopters. Although these simple chargers do the job, they don’t support features such as displaying cell voltage and selecting the charge rate. Using the Common Sense RC Micro-6 charging adapter, you can charge up to 6 of these micro batteries at a time using your existing computer charger / discharger / cycler.

The Micro-6 charging adapter works by connecting 6 batteries at a time in parallel. Charging is still done using a 1 cell battery setting, but the charging rate can be increased by a factor of the number of batteries you’re charging. Here’s how to use the Micro-6 charging adapter with any typical computerized lipo charger:

• Select the 1 cell lipo charge mode.
• Ensure that all the micro batteries you are charging are at roughly the same charge state.
• Plug the batteries and the Micro-6 charging adapter into your computerized charger, ensuring you follow the correct polarity.
• Charge at the rate you would usually charge a single 1 cell lipo of a given capacity, times the number of batteries that you are charging. For example, if you typically charge a 1 cell 100 mAh lipo at 2C (.2 Amps), 6 of them would be charged at a rate of 1.2 Amps.

You can discharge batteries following the same procedure, just make sure to select the right discharge rate. A good rule to remember is that multiple batteries wired in parallel act as a single larger battery at the same voltage. When charging 6 1 cell 100 mAh batteries in parallel, you would use the same settings as when charging a 1 cell 600 mAh lipo.

A note about balancing: charging cells in parallel won’t keep the voltage in each cell the same. This is why it is important to start parallel charges with the voltage in each cell approximately the same, to ensure that no cell gets overcharged. A good technique would be to store your micro 1 cell lipo batteries at about a 50% charge (3.8 volts), then charge them all at once before you want to go flying using the Micro-6 charging adapter. You can then fly the batteries to your speed controller’s low voltage cutoff and charge them all together again.

Using the Micro 6 Cell charging adapter, you can use your existing computer chargers and equipment with 1 cell batteries. When done properly, charging in parallel makes battery maintenance and charging simple and efficient. Update your micro models with the Micro-6 adapter today!
